Marika Zakariashvili brings two figures together in The Companions — an elderly man and woman seated quietly beside one another.
There is something familiar about them. Their expressions, their clothes, the way they sit together — everything suggests a relationship that has existed long before this particular moment.
Zakariashvili is interested in these small details. Rather than giving us a complete story, she gives us two characters and leaves the rest to our imagination.
Who are they? What are they talking about? How long have they known each other?
We don’t really need to know.
For a moment, they are simply together.
